James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
James Hardie bathroom remodeling in Dallas typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, depending on the size of the wet area, the condition of the existing backing, and whether you’re keeping the current layout or moving plumbing. We stock James Hardie backer board and compatible substrates on our trucks, which means most material pickups happen before we ever knock on your door, not after we open the wall.
Most homeowners discover they need James Hardie-specific work after tile starts cracking, grout keeps falling out, or a shower corner keeps letting water through no matter how many times it’s been caulked. The board behind the tile has usually softened or delaminated from years of North Texas humidity swings and the occasional cold snap that makes everything in a slab home work a little harder. By the time you can see it, the substrate has usually been failing for months.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

In bathrooms, the James Hardie product you’re almost always dealing with is HardieBacker cement board, either the 1/2-inch version for walls or the 1/4-inch version for floors and countertops. The 1/2-inch board gets installed over studs before tile goes up. The 1/4-inch version goes over plywood or OSB subfloor before floor tile. They are not interchangeable, and using the wrong thickness under floor tile is one of the most common causes of cracked grout lines in older Dallas remodels.
The compatibility gotcha nobody tells you about: HardieBacker is not waterproof on its own. It will not rot, but it will pass moisture through to the wood behind it. In a Dallas shower, that means the board needs a surface-applied membrane or plastic sheeting behind it, depending on how the shower was originally framed. If a previous installer skipped that step and tiled straight onto the board, the failure is already in progress even if the tile still looks fine.
For the OEM versus aftermarket decision: James Hardie makes the board, but the tape, screws, and sealants that make the system work come from a short list of manufacturers we order by name, including USG and Custom Building Products. We’ll use HardieBacker screws with the correct corrosion coating, alkali-resistant mesh tape at every seam, and a sealant rated for continuous water exposure. Generic drywall screws or mesh tape that is not alkali-resistant will fail inside five years, and that is not a warranty issue anyone wants to litigate.
Bradford Remodeling Co Dallas is an independent service provider and not affiliated with James Hardie. We install a documented roster of name-brand materials, including James Hardie, KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone, because specifications should be traceable, not guessed at.

Signs Your James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout keeps cracking in the same shower corner. The underlying HardieBacker has typically lost its bond to the studs, or the studs themselves have shifted as the slab settled. Re-grouting covers the symptom; it does not fix the board flexing behind it.
- The wall sounds hollow when you tap it in one specific spot. A properly bedded backer board sounds solid. Hollow spots mean the board has pulled away from the adhesive or the fasteners have corroded and let go.
- Water stains appear on the ceiling below the bathroom. That is a through-the-floor leak, which in a Dallas home usually means the 1/4-inch underlayment was never sealed at the seams or the drain assembly is not bonded to the board correctly.
- Caulk turns black or peels within weeks of being replaced. Moisture is migrating behind the tile and pushing through the joint from the back side. Caulk is not the problem; the waterproofing layer behind the board is.
- The shower floor flexes slightly underfoot. HardieBacker adds rigidity, but it cannot compensate for a rotted subfloor. If the floor moves, the board is riding on spongy plywood, and the whole base needs to come out before retiling.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Dallas, a James Hardie bathroom remodel with proper substrate replacement runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed. A small guest bath where we keep the original footprint and replace the surround lands near the bottom of that range. A master bath where we gut everything to the studs, move a drain line, rebuild the shower pan, and install new HardieBacker throughout lands toward the top.
The variables that move the number: whether the studs are salvageable, whether the plumbing rough-in meets current Dallas code or needs updating, and whether the original shower pan is still sound. Every job includes the demolition, the new backer board and waterproofing, the tile work, the fixtures, and cleanup. Water damage repair that we find after demo gets priced in writing before we proceed, not after the fact.
What does not change is the written price. We hand you a line-item quote before any work starts, per the Garrison Standard. No numbers move at the door. Every completed project carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work fails within one year, we come back and correct it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: whether the grout is cracked, whether a wall sounds hollow, whether water stains are appearing below the bathroom. Those observations help us scope the job before we arrive.
What you should not do is pull tile off a shower wall to see what’s behind it. Wet HardieBacker is heavy, the edges are sharp, and if the board is waterlogged, it can come away in large pieces that take a chunk of drywall or tile with it. More importantly, once the waterproofing layer is breached, the clock starts on the wood behind it. A partially opened shower wall in a Dallas summer will turn moldy fast. If you suspect the substrate is gone, call us at (903) 326-8963 and we will open the wall the right way, with the replacement material already on the truck so the bathroom is not left open a day longer than it needs to be.
FAQs

Installed correctly, HardieBacker in a properly waterproofed Dallas shower should last 30-plus years, but the waterproofing layer needs to be intact for that to hold. What usually fails first is the sealant or membrane, not the board itself, and that failure starts wicking water into the backing material long before you see it.
In small areas, yes, a section of damaged HardieBacker can be cut out and patched with new board, mesh-taped at the seams, and re-waterproofed. That works when the damage is isolated. If the board has been wet for months or the fasteners are corroded across the whole wall, a patch job is just delaying the inevitable. Call (903) 326-8963 and we’ll tell you straight which situation you have.
Most Dallas bathroom remodels with full HardieBacker replacement take 5 to 10 working days from demo to final grout, depending on whether we’re moving plumbing and whether the subfloor needs rebuilding. A straightforward shower surround replacement typically takes 3 to 5 working days. We’ll give you a written schedule with the quote, and a signed copy of the 365-Day Done Right Promise with the final walkthrough.
