Schluter Driveway & Pavers: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Schluter-compatible driveway edging, paver substrates, and drain assemblies for Dallas homes, with most replacements running $250 to $700 installed for sealing and edge repair, and $7,000 to $18,000 for a full paver driveway installation using Schluter drainage and decoupling components under the surface. Most owners discover a problem the same way: a paver starts rocking underfoot, a drain grate lifts, or water pools where it used to run off clean. The fix is usually faster than people expect once the right part is matched.
Schluter doesn’t make pavers themselves. What they make is the waterproofing, drainage, and substrate system that sits under and around paver installations: KERDI-DRAIN assemblies, TROBA drainage mats, and DITRA decoupling membranes that keep a paver surface from shifting when the Dallas clay soil does its seasonal swell-and-shrink routine. If that layer fails, the pavers on top will tell you within a season or two.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

The parts we match for driveway and paver work fall into three Schluter product families. KERDI-DRAIN vertical and horizontal assemblies handle surface water at grade. TROBA and TROBA-PLUS drainage mats sit between the substrate and the paver base to keep water moving off the structural layer. DITRA and DITRA-DRAIN membranes work as decoupling and drainage layers where paver surfaces meet foundations, walkways, or slab edges. If your install predates 2015, you may have an older TROBA profile that Schluter has since consolidated, and the replacement will be a current-profile mat with the same drainage capacity but a different dimple depth.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see in Dallas: not every drainage mat is rated for vehicular load. TROBA-PLUS handles foot traffic and light carts. A driveway needs SCHLUTER-DITRA-DRAIN 8 or a gravel-and-pipe system under a properly compacted base. We’ve fixed too many paver driveways where a pedestrian-rated mat was used under car traffic, and the pavers started sinking within two years. If you’re unsure what’s under your pavers, one of our techs can core a small test hole and tell you in twenty minutes.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for Schluter drainage and decoupling, we use OEM. The tolerance on dimple height and drain flange fit matters, and a knockoff mat that’s 1mm off creates exactly the lippage and ponding you’re trying to eliminate. For pavers themselves, we install Belgard and Unilock, both of which we document by spec and stand behind under our own written guarantee.

Signs Your Schluter Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Rocking or wobbly pavers. The base layer has lost compaction, or the drainage mat underneath has broken down and created a void. In Dallas, this is almost always water working into the clay subgrade through a failed drain point.
- Standing water after a normal rain. A working Schluter drain assembly moves water off the surface in under an hour. Puddles that linger mean a clogged or settled KERDI-DRAIN body, or a slope that’s flattened since original install.
- Grate lifting or cracking. The stainless grate itself rarely fails; what fails is the collar around it. Once that collar shifts, the grate rocks, and every car tire over it works it looser.
- Sand or fines washing out between joints. If you’re sweeping sand back into paver joints every month, the drainage path has changed and water is moving through the joints instead of under them, which erodes the base from the top down.
- Edge line pulling away from the driveway border. This means the edge restraint has failed or was never installed. Once the border moves, the field pavers follow, and the repair scope grows every season it’s left alone.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Dallas, here’s what you should expect to pay, with real numbers.
- Drain grate and collar replacement: $250 to $700, depending on grate finish and whether the drain body itself needs re-leveling.
- Edge restraint repair with re-compaction: $500 to $1,500 for a typical 50 to 80 linear foot border.
- Partial paver reset with new Schluter drainage mat section: $1,800 to $4,500, based on square footage and base condition.
- Full paver driveway installation with Schluter drainage system: $7,000 to $18,000, driven by driveway size, paver material, and how much base correction the existing soil demands.
Every one of those numbers is a written, line-item price before we start. You’ll know the scope, the materials, and the labor. If the subgrade surprises us, you’ll know that cost before we proceed, not after the fact. All paver and drainage work we complete is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year, we come back and correct it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
There are things you can safely check. A clogged KERDI-DRAIN grate can be lifted, cleared of leaves and silt, and reset in five minutes. Joint sand can be topped up once you verify the drainage is working. Both are safe, low-stakes homeowner tasks.
What you shouldn’t do is start pulling pavers and mats without knowing what’s underneath. Dallas clay is unforgiving, and once you break the surface plane, you’ve committed to a base correction that may need plate compaction and slope work. Get that wrong and you’ll be redoing it in eighteen months, spending more than the original fix would have cost. If you want an honest read on whether your Schluter drainage layer has failed or just needs cleaning, call Curtis Lane at (903) 326-8963 and we’ll look at it. The estimate is free, and the answer will be straight.
FAQs

A properly installed Schluter drainage mat under a correctly compacted base will last 20 to 30 years in the Dallas climate; the limiting factors are base compaction depth and whether water is moving off the clay subgrade as designed.
Call (903) 326-8963 for an inspection if your system is showing signs of failure.
In most cases, yes: a failed drain grate, a settled edge restraint, or a localized base void can be repaired sectionally without replacing the entire driveway.
The exception is when the original install used the wrong-rated mat; then the fix is a full re-do. Call (903) 326-8963 to find out which situation yours is.
A drain grate replacement is done in under an hour; a partial paver reset takes one to two days; a full driveway installation with drainage typically runs five to ten working days depending on Dallas weather and base conditions.
We’ll give you a schedule in writing before work starts, and it holds. Call (903) 326-8963 to get that schedule.
We stock KERDI-DRAIN grates, collars, TROBA mats, and DITRA-DRAIN sections on our trucks; if your job needs a specific grate finish or uncommon profile, we order it directly and typically have it in hand within three to five business days.
You don’t order anything. We handle sourcing, verification, and warranty paperwork. Call (903) 326-8963 and we’ll pull the right part for your install.
